Hi, I have just tried to delete the Blog that I seem to have basically two of the same of, but it wont, so please ignore me!Im now going to do the questionnaire!
Age :18
Sex: Female
What is your degree subject: Philosophy and religious studies
Does 'Being Bad' relate well with the other subjects you are taking?: Yes because religious topics have been discussed, and the whole subject has a lot of philosophical ideas behind it.
Have you found ‘Being Bad’ too demanding, too easy, or at an appropriate level?: I have found it at a quite appropriate level, and to be honest, there is more work involved than I first anticipated.
Do you think the list of topics covered on the module was appropriate?:Yes, very appropriate. Some of them were quite disgusting, but I suppose that makes it even more appropriate!
Are there any topics not included in the module that you would like to see included?: Maybe topics such as self harm may be considered. This is really because I cant decide whether it is good or bad, and I think it would be good for discussion.
Do you think that the format for classes has worked well?Yes, I do not see how the format could have been much different really.
What did you think of the module team? If it gets me extra marks, they were all wonderful! Seriously, I have no complaints. All very informative,I missed quite a few lessons, and the notes I used to research were all very thorough.
Do you think it would have been better to have had more:
Small group discussions? Possibly, although its good to know what a wider amount of people think.
Discussion and debate among the class as a whole? I think there was enough.
Information and talk from lecturers? Not really.
The approach taken in the module is interdisciplinary (drawing on perspectives from English Literature, Film Studies, Creative Writing, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Media Studies and Politics): do you think this a useful way of approaching the topics covered in the module? I definitely agree with that yes, as it gives you a more relaxed approach to looking at such controversial subjects, and I think that makes it easier to handle.
Do you think that interdisciplinary modules are a good idea? With regards to this subject matter yes, but I don't think it would work for all subjects.
Do you think you have benefited from the interdisciplinary approach taken in the module?Yes, completely. It is quite a refreshing change.
Would you like to see more modules that cover this kind of subject matter?Yes, it does intrigue and interest me a lot.
Are you planning to take the follow-up module PH2004 ‘Thou Shalt Not’ (note: the name of this module is likely to be changed to ‘It Shouldn’t be Allowed!’) at level 2?No, but that is because it is not available to me as I need to take other modules as a priority.
Would you recommend ‘Being Bad’ to a friend?Yes.
Do you think that the blogs (web logs) were a good idea?Yes, as it allows you to put forward your ideas in a non formal way, and personally, I think my ideas come across better in that way.
What did you think of the other assessments (e.g. would it be better to have one longer assessment rather than two shorter ones?)?: I think I would have preferred one longer assessment as apose to the two shorter ones. The word count of 300 words was very hard to stick too, as I like to babble!
What have you learned from the module?I have actually learned a lot. I have learned that some things that I would have regarded as plain 'bad' before this module, sometimes need a lot more thought to decide whether they are as bad as they seem. I have learnt a lot of facts about the actual modules themselves, and the subject matters I thought were really interesting, so I have also learned how to stay awake during lectures! (joke!)
What parts of the module have you found most useful and why?I found the being too religious module useful, as I take religious studies, yet I found the body modification and masturbation topics really useful, as I found them the most interesting, and I learned a lot of things that I never knew before.
What parts do you think were a waste of time and why?I didn't think any of it was a waste of time, but I thought the Bandits session was a bit boring.
Are there any other comments you wish to make regarding ‘Being Bad’? I just thought it was a really interesting module, with lots to learn and make you cringe! It was just enjoyable really, as it was something different. A refreshing change to all the boring lectures you may have!

Hi everyone, I cant believe that tomorrow all of these have to be in! Anyway, i was just doing some last minute surfing of the net, and I came across this really disgusting picture of a smokers lungssmokers lung! When I saw it, it really made me feel physically ill, so smokers, If i were you, I really would'nt look at this one!

As I personally find tattoos really fascinating, and as I have done my second assignment on tattoos with regards to body modification, I thought I would look at some tattoos on the web. Although personally I find all over body tattoos a bit over the top, i do think that the people who have them must have an extremely high pain thresh hold, and this man certainly must!tattoed man
I was just looking around the net to find things on smoking. Now too me, smoking is a real pet hate of mine, probably because I have seen too many of the people I care for become ill through the effects of smoking, and although I do not perceive it as being 'bad' in the way that you must be a bad person to smoke, I really do not view smoking as being a good thing to do. I understand that when you are younger, it is the general perception that smoking makes you look 'cool' and 'big', and peer pressure can make you addicted to tobacco, yet I do think on the other hand that there is enough media protesting against cigarettes to put young people off for good. I know it did to me. I remember the only time I ever tried a cigarette was when I was absolutely drunk one night at a friends party, and I was so sick I never wanted to do it again, I remember even feeling guilty for taking those few puffs out of it. I guess I am just very anti smoking, and when I saw some of the facts on this sitethe truth about smokingI realised why. Apparently world wide, tobacco products kill 4.9 million people a year, and cigarettes kill 1,200 Americans every single day. Those facts are quite scary when you think about them, and to me, puffing on a cigarette is really not worth it.
I was just reading Danielles blog danielles blogand i couldn't believe what I read. Two boys not older than 15, went on to her bus and pulled a knife out onto a couple just for the sake of stealing their mobile phones. This type of behavior in my eyes, is what is really 'bad'. The thing that got me though was that no one on the bus tried to stop the boys, and they were allowed to just go ahead and steal the phones with ease. Although I do not blame the people on the bus, as I probably would have acted the same in that situation if truth be known, it is because in many ways, of peoples behavior towards crime in this day and age, that so much crime is able to take place. People just don't want to know, and it is not so much because they are uninterested, but because they fear themselves of criminals, or because so much crime now takes place, that it has become in some way accepted.I mean, if you hear a burglar alarm go off on a house down a street, it is very rare that you will pick up the phone and ring the police, but instead you will moan about the noise it is causing, and turn the telly up higher, at least I know that is what happens in my house! So my point is, that maybe there is so much crime at the minute in society, because it has become socially acceptable, and people just don't see it as anything new or major anymore?
I was just looking at things to back up my second assignment, which I am basically doing on Body modification and the discrimination it can cause. I am particularly focusing on tattoos, and how people are discriminated against within the workplace, and while searching the net, it was quite unbelievable to see how many people actually feel that having a tattoo makes them feel less qualified or important within their area of work. Many people have actually been fired or seen as not as clever or worthy because of their tattoos, and I personally think that this is unacceptable. More and more people are now having tattoos, and I believe that employers should move into the modern world and accept this, instead of turning away prospective intelligent and hard working people, just because of a tattoo on their bodies.Has your body art caused discrimination?
I was just reading Laurie Richards blogLauries Blog and I really couldn't get over some of the things I read. She has got this link that looks at stupid laws from around the world, and some made me laugh, yet others made me realise that we live in a very sad, sad world. I mean, don't you agree that if there wasn't some badness, then the world would be an extremely boring place?
As I said before about reading Portneys complaint, and finding it quite disgusting, me and my friend went looking for the website on portneys complaint, and found that you can listen to the book spoken in dialogue across the net! We found it that foul, we ended up listening to it all, and were very dissapointed when the dirty bits were not read out,so if you want to be dissapointed like we were, then check out the website! The Philip Roth Society
I cant believe how long it has been since I have written a blog, it seems like forever! On top of not being in lectures due to a lot of family stuff, my computer keeps going all weird and this is the first time I've gone on here and it has worked in ages, woo hoo! I have been reading a lot of stuff from all the lectures, and looking at other peoples blogs for their views on things, and may I just say, how eye opening is this course! Before I read a lot of things in this course, such as Portneys complaint, the stuff on the body modification and the smoking section, I didn't really have any views on these subjects, or I didn't think I did, they were just issues that I never considered, but now, I have my own thoughts on why I believe some things can be good or bad for different reasons. Im just going off to do assignment now, but cant think what about!Oh well, I'll surprise myself!

I was just sitting at home, trying to complete a philosophy essay, and thought I would stop to have a break. During this break I started to read Portnoy's Complaint, the reading material for week two's lecture on masturbation. Lets just say, I was not expecting that! It was extremely graphic from the offset, and while reading it, I didn't know whether to laugh hysterically or find it quite sick. I think that that is what masturbation is still perceived as though, it is still quite a taboo subject, and people still may find talking and reading about it quite strange, I know I did! Yet again, I am not male and probably don't have as much prior experience in the field!;-)! Lets just say I'm looking forward to what's going to be said during that lecture!

Today was the lecture about bandits and outlaws. I found it quite interesting to find out why people perceive some 'criminals' as hero figures, and why sometimes the bad guys are the good guys. The idea of Robin Hood for example, being a 'social bandit' who was a champion of the poor, was something that I had grown up to believe, and when I had watched films and read books as a child, Robin Hood was always seen as being a sort of 'hero figure' in my mind. Today's lecture made me rethink this view, and although there is no 'real' proof that Robin Hood ever existed, it made me look at his character, and challenge my thoughts as to whether he is as good as he is sometimes perceived to be.
At the end of the day, if in today's society, there was a person or a group of people going around stealing from people to benefit themselves or their own community, i believe that they would be frowned upon, not idolised at all.
I believe that the 'good bad guys' were from a historical period that has now passed, and could definately not be percieved in the way that they once were in todays society. This is because various circumstances have changed. Laws have changed, and peoples views on crime may have altered dramatically.
